How to achieve youthful looking skin
Collagen is an abundant, fibrous protein in the body that is responsible for support, strength, elasticity and hydration within the skin, bones, cartilage and tendons. Skin is the largest organ in the body and therefore requires high amounts of collagen to maintain its integrity. Collagen is responsible for the texture and appearance of our skin, providing us with a youthful appearance. As collagen production declines, signs of ageing begin to appear in the form of wrinkles, dry or sagging skin, stiff joints and brittle hair and nails.
There are many reasons for the decline in collagen production:
- Ageing: As we age, collagen production naturally slows down and the collagen fibres become damaged. As a result, the skin becomes fragile, less elastic and lined with wrinkles- giving us an ‘older’ appearance.
- Obesity: Obesity can cause the break down and disorganisation of collagen fibres due to the increased number of fat cells. As a result of this, structural changes in the skin occur, leading to cellulite, stretchmarks, sagging skin, thickened skin and wrinkles.
- Diabetes: Those with diabetes have poor collagen production, contributing to the formation of diabetic ulcers and poor wound healing.
- Caffeine: High consumption of caffeine can inhibit collagen synthesis and have a negative effect on wound healing and the ageing process.
- Other causes: Stress, steroid creams, excessive sun exposure, low levels of oestrogen, free radicals, autoimmune disease and low protein diet.
What nutrients are needed for good collagen production?
- Vitamin C: Required for the building of collagen and the constant repair of tissues and organs.
- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM): Helps to maintain and enhance skin integrity and tissue pliability.
- Silica: Helps to strengthen and support connective tissue, bones and skin.
- Biotin: To help strengthen the hair and prevent hair loss. These nutrients are combined in Collagen Food powder.
What else can I do?

Can I use collagen supplements and foods to replace collagen in my body, I’ve had a total hysterectomy, hence no Estrogen is produced.
Hi Sharon,
Our Collagen Food Powder contains nutrients that support collagen production in the body. This is a great starting point for replenishing collagen.
Another great strategy is to regularly consume bone broth. Bone broth is rich in minerals and gelatine and is fantastic for joints. We have some recipes on our website.
Ensuring that you are consuming enough protein is also really important as collagen is a protein. You should aim to consume at least 0.8g of protein per kg of your body weight daily.
Kind regards,
Louise
