Tips for easing mucus congestion in children

By naturopath Margaret Jasinska

A blocked nose is no fun for a child or their parents. It can interfere with sleep and produce a cranky and irritable child. Blocked sinuses can cause a headache and facial pain. Infections and allergies can cause excess mucus production. The following tips can help relieve discomfort.

The enzyme in pineapple called bromelain can break down mucus

Bromelain can also help reduce inflammation and protect against allergies. Pineapple can be served on its own as a snack, added to fruit salad or juiced.

Keep your child well hydrated

Offer them lots of fluids like water, clear soups and herbal teas. Hydration helps to thin the mucus, making it much easier to expel from the body.

Nasal irrigation is safe and beneficial

Saline solution acts as a mucolytic, which means it draws out the mucus that is clogging up the nasal passage. Clearing out the nasal cavities with salt water will help wash away bacteria and other irritants that are trapped there. Saline nasal drops and sprays are available from pharmacies.

Increase raw vegetables and fruit

Lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits are packed with vitamin C and bioflavonoids which support and strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation in the body. Vitamin C is degraded by exposure to heat, light and air, so consume immediately after cutting or juicing to receive the greatest immune benefits.

Many children don’t eat enough fresh produce. This is usually even more of a problem when they have an infection because it can cause loss of appetite. Childrens Immune Strength powder is a delicious blend of the nutrients children need in order to keep their immune system strong. It can help to reduce the frequency and duration of mild upper respiratory tract infections.

Sugar weakens the immune system

Sugar is highly inflammatory to the body and also feeds bad bacteria and yeast in the intestines. The more sugar one eats, the more food for microbes to thrive on as they spread throughout the nose, throat and sinuses

Steam inhalations relieve symptoms

Inhaling steam is easy and very effective for clearing nasal passages. You can put eucalyptus oil in a bowl of boiling water, place your child’s head over the top with a tea towel and allow them to inhale.

Dairy products and wheat can increase congestion

These foods can be inflammatory to the body and encourage excess mucus production. In those with chronic sinus problems, they should be avoided to reduce risk of a flare up. Dairy products can be replaced with plant based alternatives such as coconut yoghurt and almond milk.
