5 beverages to settle an upset stomach

Whether the cause of your upset stomach be related to the stomach flu which includes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramping, and abdominal pain, or whether it is caused by indigestion, bloating or constipation, these 5 drinks may provide some relief:

1. Water

It should come as no surprise that it is so essential to stay hydrated at all times, especially when experiencing any digestive upset. Being dehydrated makes digestion more difficult and less efficient, increasing the risk of an upset stomach. Insufficient water intake can cause constipation, nausea and cramps, and it is critical to restore hydration status after experiencing diarrhoea or vomiting.

2. Ginger tea

Ginger is well known for relieving nausea, and although it can be added to foods it is very convenient to have in the form of tea. Ginger contains chemicals called gingerols and shogaols that help to speed up stomach contractions, allowing foods that cause indigestion to move more quickly through the body. The chemicals in ginger may also be helpful in alleviating vomiting and diarrhoea.

3. Peppermint tea

Not only is peppermint great for your breath, but peppermint tea can help relieve digestive symptoms such as gas, bloating and indigestion. A study also found that just the smell of peppermint may reduce nausea.

4. Aloe juice

A study found that people who consumed 10 ml of aloe juice a day for 4 weeks experienced relief from: heartburn, flatulence, belching, nausea and vomiting. Aloe juice may provide relief by reducing excess stomach acid, encouraging healthy bowel movements and toxin removal, promoting a healthy balance of gut bacteria, and reducing inflammation.

5. Coconut water

Coconut water is high in the electrolytes; potassium and magnesium. These nutrients can help to reduce pain, muscle spasms and cramps. Sipping up to 2 glasses of coconut water every 4-6 hours can help ease an upset stomach.

Beverages to avoid include: alcohol, soft drinks, and coffee. Alcohol is a toxin that is difficult to digest and can damage the liver and stomach lining, soft drinks are full of sugar which can worsen diarrhoea and bloating, and coffee is a diuretic which can worsen diarrhoea.
