7 self-care tips for mums
By Louise Belle BHSc (Nut Med)
Being a good mother doesn’t mean that you have to give up your social life, your hobbies or things that you enjoy. Yes, your child (or children) take up most of your time and need your full care and attention, but it’s still so important to take time out every so often to care for yourself. A healthier and happier you, makes for healthier and happier children. You will be amazed how a little TLC can leave you feeling like a completely different woman.
1. Take time out
Even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, take some time out! Go outside, have a cup of tea, lie on your bed, do some deep breathing, or call up a friend and catch up on the latest gossip. Just do something you enjoy to rejuvenate you a little. It doesn’t have to be a big chunk of time, just long enough for you to unwind.
2. Take care of your skin
Motherhood can be an emotional roller coaster and can leave us with insecurities. Taking care of your skin will help you to maintain a youthful look and leave you feeling more confident. Drink plenty of water, moisturise regularly, do a weekly facemask, steam your face and exercise to get rid of impurities. Collagen Food powder contains nutrients that boost collagen production to help with skin elasticity, wrinkles and overall skin health.
3. Stretch
Stretching can be so therapeutic. It can relieve muscle tension, oxygenate your body, improve flexibility and induce relaxation. It doesn’t take up too much time to give yourself a good stretch, but you will reap the benefits. Try to set aside 5 minutes a day to do some stretches. There are plenty of free yoga tutorials online that you can use for some inspiration.
4. Get a hobby
Having a hobby is really important for your self-identity (and your sanity). Yes, you are a mum, but you can do so many other things. Pick a hobby that you’re interested in (or something you’ve never even tried) that will fit in with your schedule. Whether it’s a pottery or Zumba class for an hour a week or crocheting or sketching in between feeds. A hobby will give you something to look forward to and give you a sense of fulfilment.
5. Eat well
It can be all too easy to focus your energy on feeding your children and let your own diet slip between the cracks. Good nutrition is so vitally important for every function in your body. If you find that you’re tired, run down, prone to getting sick, stressed, anxious or anything in between, you’ll be surprised how some good food can help you get back on track. You may not always have time for a sit-down meal but try to have healthy snacks on hand. A good quality meal replacement like QuickLoss is great to have on the go, to ensure you are getting the nutrients you need.
6. Ask for help
There is no shame in asking for help. Being a mum is a full-time job in itself and can take its toll on your mental or physical health. Don’t be afraid to ask your partner, mother, sibling or a friend to mind your little ones for an hour so you can have some ‘me time’. They won’t think less of you for it. Catch up with a friend for coffee, get a massage or simply sit somewhere quiet and relax.
7. Be social
Try not to hide yourself away from society because you’re too tired, stressed, busy or lacking in confidence. This only makes the situation worse. Your friends and family love you anyway, so take all the support you can get. Invite your loved ones over for a cuppa tea or meet them down at the park with your kids. Having adult conversation from time to time is good for the soul!
