The 6 best beauty foods you should be eating

By Louise Belle BHSc (Nut Med)

Is your hair dull and lifeless? Is your skin dry, sagging and lacks that beautiful glow? Do you feel like your exterior is ageing faster than you are? You could be lacking in essential vitamins and minerals that are needed for strong and healthy hair, skin and nails.

1. Pepitas

Otherwise known as pumpkin seeds, pepitas (and other seeds) are a great source of zinc. About 6% of zinc in the body is located in the skin, and is needed for skin cell renewal, wound healing and helps to keep acne at bay. Zinc deficiency can be associated with brittle nails, hair loss and dermatitis. The moral of this story- eat your seeds!

2. Citrus fruit

Lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit and mandarins are a fantastic source of immune-boosting vitamin C! Vitamin C is essential for the production of collagen; the most abundant protein in the body which is needed for the structure, elasticity and appearance of skin. Getting enough vitamin C in your diet is essential to reduce the appearance of fine lines and to improve skin elasticity.

3. Eggs

These white orbs of golden goodness are packed full of protein, healthy fats and essential vitamins and minerals. One of the vitamins in egg yolk specifically is biotin, which is an important component for the protein structure of hair and nails. Low biotin levels can result in thinning and dull hair and dry, scaling skin.

4. Fish

Get some fish on your dish! Salmon, sardines, anchovies, herring and mackerel are great sources of good fats. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are critical for maintaining the structure and appearance of skin, and for keeping inflammation at bay. If you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, rashes and dry or dull skin; increasing fish (and other good fats) in your diet could really help!

5. Green beans

When your mother made you have a side of green beans with every meal, she wasn’t punishing you she was doing you a favour! Green beans are a good source of silica, which is well known for its importance for maintaining healthy hair, skin and nails. Be sure to serve yourself up a big helping of green beans with dinner tonight.

6. Sauerkraut

And other fermented foods like miso, kombucha, yoghurt, tempeh and kimchi are fantastic for improving the population of the good bacteria in your gut. They are full of live probiotics (good bugs) which make up the microbiome of your gut. The health of your gut is often reflected on your skin; this is referred to as the gut-skin connection and has been gaining momentum in research.
