5 reasons you may benefit from magnesium!

By Louise Belle BHSc (Nut Med)

Did you know that magnesium is a co-factor in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body? Yes, that’s right – it’s pretty important! It is one of the most abundant minerals in the body and can be classified as an electrolyte. Magnesium is found in leafy green vegetables, amaranth, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, brown rice, tofu, legumes and nuts. It can be taken as a supplement in the form of powder or tablets to ensure you reach the therapeutic dose. It can also be applied directly to the skin in the form of oil or salts for targeted relief, although topical application does not raise blood levels of magnesium sufficiently and should not be relied upon as a sole source of supplementation.

1. Stress

With work pressures, financial commitments, family responsibilities and everything else in between, it’s no surprise that a large percentage of the population is stressed out. A little stress here and there is completely normal, but when you’re experiencing long term, chronic stress it can be detrimental to your health. Magnesium helps to improve the physiological response to stress and promotes relaxation. It sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

2. Sleep

Do you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or just getting a good night’s sleep in general? So many people struggle with their sleep. It can throw out your entire day, leaving you feeling tired and unrefreshed. The mineral magnesium can help to promote healthy sleep. Who doesn’t want a good night’s sleep?

3. PMS

Sorry fellas, this one doesn’t apply to you (or maybe it does if you’re living with a female). PMS or pre-menstrual tension is the onset of symptoms such as cramping, headaches, mood swings and tender breasts before or during the menstrual cycle. Magnesium may actually help to reduce the symptoms of PMS. It’s worth a try!

4. Muscles

Magnesium is very important for balancing muscle contraction and relaxation. People who are low in magnesium can experience muscle cramps, spasms and twitches. Those that do a lot of exercise lose excess electrolytes (including magnesium) through sweat. Supplementing with magnesium can help to ease muscle cramps and spasms.

5. Nervous system

Your nervous system is made up of a complex network of nerves and cells that basically carry messages to and from the brain and around the body. Our nervous system allows us to think and to move. You guessed it! Magnesium is an important mineral required for maintaining a healthy nervous system.
