10 essential superfoods to maximise your workout

By Jessah Robinson, Nutrition Consultant

Are you looking to get the most out of your workout? Whether your exercise routine involves swimming, yoga, walking, CrossFit, HIIT training or weights, these superfoods may be what you’re looking for to get even better results and boost muscle recovery.

1. L-glutamine

While not technically a food, L-glutamine is the most plentiful amino acid in the body and is a building block of protein. For people who regularly work out, even one hour of exercise can deplete glutamine in the body. L-glutamine gives your muscles the energy they need to push that little bit further and aids metabolism of fat by supporting new muscle growth.

2. Chia seeds

Although only small, chia seeds are bursting with omega 3 fats for sustained energy, as well as being high in plant-based protein and antioxidants. Having chia pre-workout can provide fat for fuel after you have burnt off carbohydrates, and having chia post-workout can provide tissue repairing protein.

3. Coconut water

Drinking coconut water is an ideal way to replenish the electrolytes that are lost through sweat during exercise. Coconut water is especially important if exercising in a hot environment, and is recommended during sustained workouts, as well as post-workout.

4. Golden Pea Protein

A superior form of vegan protein which is essential for boosting energy, maintaining lean muscle mass and aiding muscle repair.

5. Magnesium

A powerful mineral that plays an essential role in maintaining efficient muscle and nerve function. It is a potent muscle relaxant that is useful in preventing and treating muscle spasms, twitches and cramping, and is an excellent aid for muscle recovery.

6. Pomegranate juice

Pomegranate has been shown to accelerate muscle recovery as well as improve muscle strength after resistance training. It is also great to take pre-workout as it improves blood flow and enhances exercise performance.

7. Acai berry

Due to their high antioxidant content, these powerful berries can boost energy levels, promote faster recovery times and increase stamina. They are also very high in protein, making it the perfect post-workout meal to aid muscle building and repair.

8. Turmeric

Curcumin is a plant chemical found in turmeric and has been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Curcumin can also increase muscle mobility, increase the rate of muscle regeneration and decrease muscle recovery time post-workout.

9. Bromelain

Is a natural enzyme that is present in pineapple and is an anti-inflammatory which can help to break down inflamed tissue and help prevent muscle damage after exercise. By soothing connective tissue and muscles, it’s also very effective for relaxing tense muscles.

10. Aloe Vera

This soothing plant has many benefits, but when it comes to exercise it boosts energy levels by naturally cleansing the digestive system and helps to maintain a healthy body weight. It’s also very effective for reducing inflammation in the joints, which can be effective for post-exercise recovery.
